"First Impressions of Hong Kong"
An excerpt from Fred's Diary
I was soon outside and got my first taste of the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Waited twenty minutes for a 201 bus to take me to Kowloon and sat dazed in the bus trying to take in the many sights amid the clamour of Chinese conversation, which to say the least is pretty loud.
After a ride of half an hour I got off the bus in Kowloon and within twenty minutes, with the help of a young Chinese woman, had located Chungking Mansions, a collection of supposedly cheap guest houses.
Eventually found a room free in one run by an old woman for HK$40. I tried knocking the price down for a longer stay but she wouldn't consider it. Being tired I decided to take it for one night and look around tomorrow for alternatives.
Got into the room and tried to get some rest. I got a couple of hours sleep disturbed by a TV being played loud in the next room. One thing I'm going to have to get used to here is noise. It is now 8:30 p.m. and I am going to go out in search of something to eat and drink.
I returned to the room just before midnight after a fascinating if bewildering wander around different parts of Kowloon. Lots of bright lights, scores of different shops and stalls, amazing contrasts between rich and poor, the swish tourist hotels near the waterfront compared with the slums and beggars in the backstreets.
Saw a few western faces but not many. Had a meal in McDonalds of all places as I couldn't pluck up courage to go into one of the Chinese restaurants. Feeling a bit lost and far from home but hopefully that will soon pass.

What a wonderful story, a bit sad at times
By Imagine The Possibilities on January 9, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition
Flame and Hope: An African Adventure (Fauna Park Tales Book 1) I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What a wonderful story, a bit sad at times, but all in all a great tale told from the perspective of Flame aka 'Jack Old Boy'.
Flame was a skinny puppy who's life was devastated by some strangers. His caretaker gave him over to a close friend in hopes that the small puppy would have a better life. As an adult dog, Flame relives his days with the help of a feathered friend as they tell his story to all the animals on the farm where he lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the illustrations throughout this book. I read this to my children and was very pleased to see the excitement on their faces as I narrated it to them.
If you enjoy reading children's stories than I would recommend this book you. Actually, I would recommend this book to people of all ages as it would be enjoyed by all.

Very cool book

Friends: An African Adventure (Fauna Park Tales Book 2)
I don't usually review children's books but received this from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book is really cool. The author clearly put a lot of personal knowledge about a foreign (to me) place, and the flavor of the book is cool and interesting. The use of animals as characters I think makes the story accessible for children even if they might not be familiar with Africa, and it might just spark an interest in learning more.
The artwork is simple, but in a nice way that fits with the tone of the story. As a kid, I know I would have tried to copy the pictures and draw them myself, so that's another fun route kids could go with this book.
I'd certainly recommend this for anyone trying to get kids interested in Africa. It's also just a nice story with a good message for kids.

#RPBP #ASMSG The "Critical Review" with Fred's Diary 1981: Travels In Asia @fredsdiary1981
1/22/2016
Reader reviews can tell you a lot about a book.
If you see nine 4 or 5 star ratings and a single 1 star rating, what does that say to you? Does it say the book is not worth reading because 1 person out of ten didn't like it? No, I think it means the opposite! 9 out of 10 people must have really enjoyed it! Do you see the difference here, are you an optimist or a pessimist?
Well, I'm an optimist. Most of the time anyway, but especially when it comes to book reviews.
Let's take a look at Fred's Diary 1981.

Can you decide whether or not you want to read this memoir about Robert Fear and his Travels through Asia just by reading the synopsis of the book?
Maybe you can, maybe you can't.
However, there are these things called book reviews and this book has them!

Now, these are from genuine readers. People who have purchased or been given this book, read the book and decided to let the author and other potential readers know what they thought!
I'm going to use the reviews from Amazon to hash out the general consensus on Fred's Diary 1981 and his Travels in Asia.
I'm going to start out by listing the ratios:
5 Star reviews=14
4 Star reviews=7
3 Star reviews=1
1 Star reviews=1
Total reviews listed= 23
I'm sure you can do the math yourself, but let me break this down for you.
Out of the 23 people that left a review for "Fred's Diary 1981", 21 of them really enjoyed the book.
The two left over reviews are considered "critical reviews". Which after reading them, I've decided that they aren't what I would consider a "critical review".
I don't normally do this, but as an author and a reviewer, I feel this is an important issue.

Purpose of a critical review
What is meant by critical?
What is meant by evaluation or judgement?
What is meant by analysis?
Writing a Critical Review
The advice in this brochure is a general guide only. We strongly recommend that you also follow your assignment instructions and seek clarification from your lecturer/tutor if needed. The critical review is a writing task that asks you to summarise and evaluate a text. The critical review can be of a book, a chapter, or a journal article. Writing the critical review usually requires you to read the selected text in detail and to also read other related texts so that you can present a fair and reasonable evaluation of the selected text. At university, to be critical does not mean to criticise in a negative manner. Rather it requires you to question the information and opinions in a text and present your evaluation or judgement of the text. To do this well, you should attempt to understand the topic from different perspectives (i.e. read related texts) and in relation to the theories, approaches and frameworks in your course. Here you decide the strengths and weaknesses of a text. This is usually based on specific criteria. Evaluating requires an understanding of not just the content of the text, but also an understanding of a text’s purpose, the intended audience and why it is structured the way it is.Analysing requires separating the content and concepts of a text into their main components and then understanding how these interrelate, connect and possibly influence each other.
structure of a critical review.
https://student.unsw.edu.au/structure-critical-review
From what I can gather out of these two links, combined with my "personal opinion", I would have to say the reviews listed as "critical" are not "critical".
But I will let you be the judge of that!
I'm going to post a few of the newest
reviews here, but you can go check them all out for yourself and decide what you think.

"Here is a book of diary entries written by a young backpacker touring Asia. I love books like this but was really showing my age when I was surprised by the use of recreational drugs. The kid got caught with a small amount of drugs and is shocked when he got caught up in that country's penal system. This isn't a review of a kid who needs a big reality check so I will not focus on that. All in all, the book kept my interest.
I was able to read this book and leave my review in exchange for this interesting book."

"An interesting look back at the tail end of the hippy trail of the 1980s, when Fred abandons his job with a bank and goes off backpacking round Asia from Hong Kong through Thailand to India and Nepal.
Recording his daily life meticulously, Fred's diary gives the reader an intimate account of his journey, which is about self-discovery as much as discovery of the countries he visits. The reader shares his meals (as a lover of Asian cuisine my mouth watered more than once), his lodgings, his fellow travellers and his casual use of dope, which lands him in jail.
What I most appreciated in this book is his openness and honesty in revealing his inner thoughts and feelings about himself, about his hopes for the future, and his angst regarding his complicated relationship with his on/off girlfriend who joins him towards the end of his journey.
An entertaining read."

This book will make you feel like you are actually traveling with Mr. Fear. It's such a great, true diary experience that will give you the bug to travel yourself. I loved reading this book because it takes you out of your everyday life into places you might not normally get to go. His easy to read passages are the perfect education if you are planning on taking a backpacking trip yourself overseas. Some of his mistakes are hilarious, while others are truly scary. SPOILER ALERT: Foreign jails! I highly recommend this exciting book for anybody with serious wanderlust.

TODD'S IN A STREET GANG, JAMIE WANTS TO BE. TO GET HIS FRIEND'S BACKING AND JOIN THE RIVERSIDE POSSE, HE TAKES HIM TO A SECRET LABORATORY. BUT DISASTER IS ABOUT TO STRIKE...
Who was the mysterious Hector Lightfoot? What was he up to when he disappeared, and who were the two ghosts once seen in his house? School friends Jamie and Todd are destined to find out when they go to London to spend a weekend with Jamie's Uncle Simon, who now lives in that very house. Soon after they arrive, Jamie has a frightening encounter with the two ghosts.
Hector, a veteran from the First Afghan War, joined a covert expedition to China, and afterwards worked on a secret Government project in an underground lab at theBritish Museum. He vanished suddenly, and was never heard from again.
Simon takes the boys to the lab, where they find a strange contraption – which, unknown to any of them, is a time-travel device. When the building is struck by lightning, the device is energized, and sends the boys back in time to the year 1862. There, surrounded by danger and exposed to disease, they are sucked into a life of crime in order to survive.
Only if they can find Hector will they have any chance of getting home again. But why has he gone into hiding? Who is the man after him and what does he want? As the boys struggle to escape back to their own time, Jamie becomes convinced that the two ghosts he saw earlier are following them…

Sketch taken from Time Trap |
I was a little worried that it would be too intense for my daughter (she sometimes frightens easily) but she loved it. It was interesting to follow along as Todd and Jamie encounter some hair-raising and sometimes threatening situations that only a determined will and strong fortitude could get them through. I love the way the characters are put into those situations where they must show courage and endurance and rely on each other to make it through. I think that serves as a good message for the young readers.
What is there not to love, Richard Smith is a fantastic story teller and Time Trap is an out of this world (or at least this place in time) adventure! Filled with twists and turns and mysterious moments, it encompasses everything I could hope for. It is well written with exceptional character development. 5 stars all the way!

Muffy spent her formative years in Europe and came of age in France.
Returning from France with her family, Muffy finished high school in Northern California and attended the University of California, Davis, and majored in Business Management. She and her husband moved to a small Island in northern Wisconsin where they owned a historic tavern, restaurant and resort business which they since have sold. They now live a charmed life by the water in SW Florida. Muffy pretends to be a serious real estate business person but, in real life, indulges her private interest in writing sexy short stories and sensual literotica.

An Excerpt From
The Para-Portage of Emily
“The Arrival”
A few short weeks ago, when Bob Macque’s law partner, John Matheson died, he sent his daughter Emily to his partner’s Island estate, two hundred and fifty miles north of Chicago, to handle his probate, personal affairs and summer estate—and to rest. This was a vacation area known to many in the Midwest as ‘North of the Tension Line’ for the calming effects of the country air and simple life. Emily, also a partner in the firm, at once believed the trip to be an intrusion in her schedule, but knew someone had to go and she did need the rest.
Emily had been just recently diagnosed with a serious heart condition which threatened her life. She was forced to slow down, reduce the stress in her life and lead an uncomplicated lifestyle or she could do irreparable damage to her heart or her body—including paralysis or even death. With the death of Uncle John, the demands of the firm were significant on Emily’s father but he put her health above all else. He felt the trip to the Island property had to be done to probate John’s business and personal affairs and, as it was important to the firm, he felt confident that sending Emily was the best course of action. She could still feel useful to the firm, probate John’s estate and rest while she worked in a pristine country estate tucked away on a remote Island nestled between Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
The only threat to Emily would be crossing ‘Death’s Door’ on the car ferry.
It was a monotonous drive alone for a woman, and while she was reluctant to leave her father burdened with the added workload at the firm, she agreed to go and take her dog, Barkley, as company. The long drive was tedious, the prospect of taking a car ferry unnerving although not a threat, and staying alone in an unfamiliar estate after a death was slightly unsettling. She wondered if the experience would do more harm to her nerves than good. But…
She needed to go. She had to go.
Unbeknownst to Emily, she was to discover the shadows created by light and dark. Furthermore, she would discover she liked it there. She had been in control of her destiny until then, but no longer. The fact was Emily would become a prisoner of the shadow’s seduction…
Emily followed Sarah’s directions to the house. The landscape along the drive to the house was pristine, white and strikingly beautiful. The only sound was of her tires on the icy gravel of the roadway, crunching and breaking under the assault of her car. The unspoiled surroundings and quiet seclusion were charming and it all began a seduction of Emily. She peered around every corner, interested in what she would behold, in whatever she might discover. She came upon the nearly hidden driveway, so hidden she was not sure she was at the right place.
But then—she saw the maiden’s statue mounted on one of the trees set back from the road. “Mariner’s Maiden”, as her Uncle often fondly referred to his summer getaway, was nestled in a small deep-water cove behind a natural break-wall of limestone rock. This has to be it, she thought. It was mounted securely on the tree trunk to mark the driveway for its rare visitors.
The maiden had a flowing blue-green skirt, ankle length to her bare feet. Beneath her skirt of blue were once white slips of petticoats, which gave her skirt fullness. She wore a short, tight red three-button vest, scalloped just under her full breasts, with very narrow straps over a pirate’s full, white blossomed undergarment that bloused with grand sleeves and tightened widely around the wrists. The shirt had slipped off her left shoulder, exposing the creamy rising flesh of her full round breast, only slightly worn by the weather. Women of this time more often than not did not wear a separate blouse but an ankle length, or a tiny bit shorter, under-dress over which they wore their vests or outer corsets. To allow the string looped neckline to be so loose that one shoulder would become bare was the origin of the term “a loose woman”, not maidenly at all.
But ships’ carvers were wont to break the rules, to suit the whims of the crewmen, not those of the ship owner or his wife. The maritime woodcarver who had created this beauty had lovingly etched every nuance and curve of her form. Her auburn hair was forced back in billowy locks down her back, presumably by the wind upon the imagined bow of the ship. She shielded her eyes, once bright and emerald, with her flat, right hand, raised over her brow so she could see clearly dead ahead. In her left hand, she held a large shell, spiral in appearance. It was a conch. The Maiden protected the ship through the waters during day or night and rain or fog. With her keen eyes alert for the ship’s safety, she would blow the conch as warning to other vessels in the area.
Or so Emily’s uncle said. He always called her, “The Maiden”. Perhaps he had been secretly in love with her; he always smiled when he spoke of her. Emily smiled now, too.
It was all very romantic, as she thought of her uncle, and turned down the driveway. Barkley was alerted to the change in the vehicle’s direction and the scenery. The driveway was quite a long, winding drive, covered in gravel and icy clay that crunched under the weight of her car. The drive, as it wove a path through the surrounding wooded forest in a bed of underbrush, ground cover and wild ferns, was blanketed by a soft white layer of melting snow. It was eerily dark at this early afternoon time of day. The towering trees of pine and birch cast a natural cover of shadows. The property, remote and nestled in this lovely forested area, smelled of woodsy moss and damp sea air.
She wondered about the wildlife—birds, bears and raccoons, most surely deer—but none were in evidence. They would no doubt make themselves visible as they foraged later in the day. It was so quiet, except for the sound of her tires and motor. Too quiet. The noise from her engine drowned out any country sounds—yet maybe there were none. She thought she would be afraid, coming here alone, but she was not afraid at all, just anxious. It was unnervingly peaceful.
Emily looked down at Barkley in her lap and scratched him behind the ears, as he stretched to the window with the changing speed of the car and the banquet of new forest smells around him. With a deep sigh, she admitted to herself she felt surprisingly calmed and comforted—protected even—by the Maiden.
